#NextGenATP Van Assche claims first win of new season in Auckland

French #NextGenATP teen Luca Van Assche picked up his first win of the 2024 season Monday by defeating American J. J. Wolf 6-4, 6-2 at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
The 19-year-old, who rallied from a set down in the final round of qualifying to defeat Jaume Munar, is No. 87 in the Pepperstone Rankings, 24 places below his career high of No. 63.
Van Assche, who reached the semi-finals of the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah last month, dropped his opening match of the season last week to Alexander Shevchenko in Brisbane.
Fellow Next Gen ATP Finals competitor Alex Michelsen did not follow Van Assche into the second round, despite bageling Portugal's Nuno Borges in the first set. World No. 66 Borges, who is just three places below his career-high ranking, rallied to win 0-6, 7-6(6), 6-3.
Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp took out American Christopher Eubanks 7-6(5), 6-2 after dropping just three points on his first serve and saving the lone break point he faced. Eubanks enjoyed a breakout season last year but finished 2023 with four straight losses.
Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, who last year upset Carlos Alcaraz in Madrid, toughed out a 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-6(4) win over French veteran Gael Monfils after saving seven of eight break points according to Infosys ATP Stats. Marozsan, 24, began the week just four places away from his career-high ranking of No. 61
