Former Top 10 stars Goffin, Pouille also qualify

#NextGenATP stars Shang Juncheng and Ethan Quinn were among those to advance through BNP Paribas Open qualifying Tuesday and book their place in the Indian Wells main draw.

The 19-year-old Shang, who is fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race to Jeddah, battled past Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round and followed it by ousting Argentine Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday. Despite failing to serve the match out at 5-4, the Chinese teen quickly rebounded to earn a break and then close the one-hour, 56-minute encounter on his second attempt.

"This year was completely different than the first year I qualified [2022]," Shang said. "I played both night matches [this year], really slow conditions, which I don't enjoy that much but I managed to pull it out. I'm super excited to play main draw and let's see."

Earlier in the day, American and 2023 NCAA singles champion Quinn overcame Italian Andrea Vavassori 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to seal his ATP Masters 1000 debut. Seventh in the PIF ATP Live Race to Jeddah, the 19-year-old Quinn, who turns 20 next week, joins fellow Americans Nicolas Moreno De Alboran and Denis Kudla as home hopes who advanced through qualifying.

Japan’s 20-year-old Shintaro Mochizuki, a semi-finalist in Tokyo last October, defeated German Benjamin Hassan 6-4, 7-6(4) and will next make his Indian Wells main draw debut.

Former Top 10 stars David Goffin and Frenchman Lucas Pouille also advanced. The Belgian Goffin escaped Italian Luca Nardi 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 while Pouille recovered from a slow start to down countryman Harold Mayot 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
