18-year-old lefty wins first Challenger title, rises to sixth in PIF ATP Live Next Gen Race

Darwin Blanch has propelled himself into strong contention for a debut spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals after claiming the title at the Tiburon Challenger.

The 18-year-old lefty navigated a rollercoaster week, highlighted by saving five match points in his opening match against Stefan Kozlov, to capture his first ATP Challenger title. With his breakthrough run, Blanch has jumped to sixth in the PIF ATP Live Next Gen Race To Reggio Calabria with 308 points.

Blanch, who became the youngest American to win a 125-level Challenger event, will now continue his charge at qualifying for the 20-and-under Next Gen ATP Finals, which will take place in Reggio Calabria, Italy, from 9-13 December.

Notably, Blanch is now just four points behind fifth-placed Federico Cina and 13 points behind fourth-placed Rei Sakamoto in the Next Gen Race. They all remain behind Rafael Jodar, Joao Fonseca and Martin Landaluce, who lead the 20-and-under field in 2026.

“It’s something that would be a big achievement," Blanch said of qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals. "Obviously you want to go match by match and not try to really think about it, but at the same time, it’s tough to not think about it because it’s there. Before this tournament, I had a bad run and I couldn’t even check the Race because it would just make me feel even worse. But it’s definitely a big goal for us and it’s something we’re aiming for."

With Sakamoto on 321 points and 12th-placed Felix Balshaw on 271, the gap between fourth and 12th is just 50 points, leaving plenty of room for movement in the coming weeks.

Joel Schwaerzler (seventh), Diego Dedura (eighth), Moise Kouame (ninth) and Jan Kumstat (10th) are all chasing their first appearance at the Next Gen ATP Finals, alongside Sakamoto, Cina and Blanch. Meanwhile, 11th-placed Nicolai Budkov Kjaer reached the semi-finals of the event last year.

Kouame, the 17-year-old Frenchman, is competing this week at the ATP 250 event in Chengdu through the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator. The programme provides additional playing opportunities for the best up-and-coming stars emerging from junior, college and traditional pathways.

Blanch claimed his first ATP Masters 1000 victory in Miami earlier this year, when he defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets, and has continued to climb the PIF ATP Rankings ever since. Following his latest milestone in Tiburon, the 18-year-old has reached a career-high World No. 166.
