Five 20-and-under talents earn ATP Masters 1000 wins on Thursday

The young guns have come to play at this year’s Miami Open presented by Itau.

On Thursday, a wave of 20-and-under talent surged into the spotlight in South Florida, with Moise Kouame, Darwin Blanch, Joao Fonseca, Rafael Jodar and Martin Landaluce all recording standout victories at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Each of them is firmly in the mix to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Spain’s Jodar led the charge with a milestone win, defeating fellow qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to claim his first Masters 1000 victory. The 19-year-old, who was outside Top 900, is now up to No. 93 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

With World No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti withdrawing, Jodar’s path has opened up, and he now faces lucky loser Aleksandar Vukic in the second round.

American teenager Blanch electrified the home crowd with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Struff. At 18, he became the youngest American to win a match at this level since Taylor Fritz a decade ago. The lefty will next meet Doha finalist and former World No. 14 Arthur Fils.

Landaluce, who grew up playing Jodar in Madrid, followed suit with a composed 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Marcos Giron. It marked his second Masters 1000 victory and his first tour-level win of the 2026 season, continuing his steady progression after last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals appearance — where he notably faced Jodar in round-robin play.

The headlines, however, belonged to France’s Kouame. The 17-year-old made history as the first player born in 2009 or later to win an ATP Tour match, defeating Zachary Svajda 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. In doing so, he also became the youngest Miami match winner and the youngest at this level since Rafael Nadal in Hamburg in 2003.

The 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals champion, Fonseca showed his class once again after reaching the Miami third round on debut last year. The 19-year-old ousted Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Thursday to set up a blockbuster first Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.
