#NextGenATP stars advance to main draw at Melbourne major

Joao Fonseca rode his electric run of form to a career milestone Thursday, when he qualified for the Australian Open main draw.

The 18-year-old Brazilian breezed past 12th seed Thiago Augustin Tirante 6-4, 6-1 in the final round of qualifying at Melbourne Park to secure a spot in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. Fonseca, who triumphed at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF in Jeddah in December and at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Canberra last week, is now on a 13-match winning streak.

Fonseca fell short in the final round of US Open qualifying in August last year, but made no mistake in Australia as he capitalised on a stellar run of form to make his breakthrough. Fonseca will be joined by fellow #NextGenATP stars Learner Tien and Martin Landaluce, marking the first time three teenagers have successfully qualified for the main draw of a major since the US Open in 2015 (Zverev, Rublev, Paul, E. Ymer).

American Tien, who fell to Fonseca in the final in Jeddah, powered past Jozef Kovalik 6-3, 6-4. The 19-year-old has competed in each of the past three editions of the US Open, but owns an 0-3 record in Grand Slams heading into the Aussie major. Landaluce, the 2022 US Open boys champion, rallied to a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Dalibor Svrcina to secure his debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam.

Spaniard Landaluce won his first tour-level match at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami last March and then captured his maiden ATP Challenger Tour crown in Olbia, Italy, in October.

Jaime Faria, Tristan Boyer, Gauthier Onclin, Matteo Gigante, Aziz Dougaz and Hady Habib all notched victories that ensured a maiden appearance in the 128-man field of a major. Portugal's Faria outlasted Mark Lajal 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, American Boyer upset fourth seed Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-4, Onclin overcame Mackenzie McDonald 6-7(7), 7-6(5), 6-1, Gigante denied Henrique Rocha 6-4, 7-5, Dougaz beat Borna Gojo 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and Habib sunk Clement Chidekh 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(8).

It All Adds Up

Former No. 16 in the PIF ATP Rankings Nikoloz Basilashvili overcame Francesco Passaro 6-3, 6-3 to earn his first outing at a Grand Slam since the 2023 Australian Open. Kamil Majchrzak will also return to the main draw of a major for the first time since 2022 after easing past Billy Harris 7-5, 6-2.
