Denis Shapovalov and Alex de Minaur have both strengthened their chances of qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals as a result of their performances at the US Open.
Last month, Shapovalov reached the Winston-Salem Open semi-finals (l. to Humbert) and carried that form into the final major championship of the year with a run to the third round, which includes wins over compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime and Swiss Henri Laaksonen. Shapovalov eventually fell to No. 13 seed Gael Monfils in five sets.
De Minaur, a winner of two ATP Tour titles in 2019 at the Sydney International (d. Seppi) and the BB&T Atlanta Open (d. Fritz), advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam championship for the first time with victories over Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Cristian Garin and World No. 7 Kei Nishikori. Last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up lost to Grigor Dimitrov in three sets.
Auger-Aliassime is currently in second position in the 2019 ATP Race To Milan with 1,648 points, behind last year’s champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. De Minaur is in third place on 1,170 points and Shapovalov on 1,075 points.
Frances Tiafoe (960), Casper Ruud (893), Miomir Kecmanovic (881) and Ugo Humbert (700) make up the top eight following their performances at Flushing Meadows.
